The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
