Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
